What I liked most about this essay was that you brought to life what it feels like being a woman in the health care system surrounding childbirth, both in the way the doctor blithely suggested tubal ligation for the first time and in your descriptions of the procedure itself. You're very exposed and all sorts of conversations take place over your most private of privates and at some point you have to laugh, inwardly or otherwise, depending on the requisite meds.

My husband had a vasectomy last fall, after much deliberation on my part (he was ready to be done after two kids; I'm still wistful). I am very grateful that he stepped up and had the procedure done. You are both good husbands, and dads.
