Anatomy of Baseball

My essay “First Base of Last Resort” is now featured in Anatomy Of Baseball, a new book edited by Lee Gutkind and Andrew Blauner, published by Creative Nonfiction and SMU Press. With contributions by writers such as Roger Angell, Frank Deford, and George Plimpton, Anatomy of Baseball is a collection of essays that reflect on the unique aspects of the game, and the role it plays in our national history and collective imagination.

Wood-Tang.com is the personal website of Matt Wood, a writer and stay-at-home dad living in Chicago. I recently graduated from Northwestern University’s Masters in Creative Writing program, where my final thesis won the 2007 Distinguished Thesis Award.

I’m a former columnist for Chicago Sports Weekly, and my work has been published at 43 Folders, Babble, Chicagoist, TimeOut Chicago, and the anthology, What Would MacGyver Do?, among others. You can see a full list of my published work on my Clips page.

Shortly after my son Carter was born in 2005, I decided to stay at home to take care of him while freelancing and supporting my wife Debbie’s real estate business. Prior to that, I worked six years in the information technology industry as a consultant, systems designer, and business analyst, traveling nationwide and to Asia, Europe, and South America. I graduated from Indiana University in 1999 with bachelor’s degrees in computer information systems, business process management, and operations management, and a minor in history. Born and raised in a small town called Poseyville, Indiana, I grew up on basketball, popcorn, and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Go straight to the blog for semi-frequent updates, anecdotes, and essays. I also post many adorable pictures of children and dogs at Flickr, and keep up a constant patter at Twitter if you’re interested in that sort of thing.
